The Commissioner of Police in the City and the Superintendent of Police in the Rural Areas maintain Law and Order in Thiruvananthapuram District. Commissioner of Police, Thiruvananthapuram is of the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police who is assisted by two Deputy Commissioners of Police of the rank of Superintendent of Police. Law and Order is maintained by one of the two Deputy Commissioners of Police and the administration and crime by another. There are altogether ten Assistant Commissioners of Police. ndent of Police heads rural Police. The sub-divisions of Attingal, Nedumangad and Neyyattinkara are each headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police. There are Assistant Commissioners for Narcotics, Control room, Traffic (north), Traffic (south) and the District Crime Records Bureau under the City Police Commissioner. Below the Assistant Commissioners are the Circle Inspectors. There are ten circles viz.,Cantonment, Fort, Thampanoor, Peroorkada, Museum, Pettah, Medical college, Poonthura, Nemom and Vizhinjam in he city and fourteen circles viz., Attingal, Varkala, Kadakkavoor, Kazhakuttom, Venjaramoodu, Kilimanoor, Nedumangad, Aryanad, Palode, Kattakkada, Neyyattinkara, Poovar and Parassala in the rural area.
The total police strength in the city including the armed reserve camp at Nandavanam and the SAP camp at Peroorkada, is about 4,500 and that in the rural police is about 2,000.Ten units of mobile squad, six units of white patrol and one highway patrol unit are operating under the city police. A Women’s Cell, a Dog Squad, Mounted Police an Airport Security Unit, Tourism Police etc are also attached to the District Police Force
An Assistant Commissioner of Police heads the Special Branch of the Office of the City Police Commissioner. The functions of the special branch include day to day law and order work, security arrangements for VVIP and VIP movements, sending to feasibility report to the Collector regarding the visit of VVIP, preparation of security scheme, security arrangements in connection with festivals, sieges and marches, advance information collection, preparation of forecast, daily reports on important matters for city officials including the District Collector.
