As the state capital district, Thiruvananthapuram is promoting a number of fast growing industrial units for industrial devolpment.There are 2 central sector ,14 state sector, 1 co-operative sector,4 joint sector ,and 60 private sector and large scale industries. The kerala state industrial development corporation engages more than 9262 employees in their various units. It spent Rs 34394 (as on 2003) for industrial elevation. In 2002 there were 901 registered factories. They included oil mills, cashew factories, cotton textiles, sawmills, printing units, rubber industrial units, Chemical units, match factories, general engineering units, chemical units, and automobile workshop. The district has some intrinsic merit in handicraft industries too .The product of handicraft has great demand in foreign countries These products of handicrafts are marketed by the S.M.S.M institute, a major institution in Thiruvananthapuram.There are a large number of small scale industrial units working in Thiruvananthapuram district. As on 31/03/03, the district had 28918 small-scale units with 1, 15,597 employees. In agro based units 4544 employees were working.3080 employees were working in forest based units , 980 in animal husbandry,5057 in pesticide ,1282 in chemical based units 4708 in engineering, 3075 manufacturing and building material section and 6192 in other industries. There were 1323 in sc/st units and 6065 in women units. The industrial estate at Pappanamcode and industries development centre at kochu veli is encouraging the industrial development in Thiruvananthapuram.
Coir and Handloom industries are other major industries in Thiruvananthapuram district .Coir industry is facing with many problems. Anjuthengu and muppini are popular for coir industries and Balaramapuram, Amaravila, Kulathoor, and Chirayinkeezhu are famous for handloom industries. It is estimated that cloths worth Rs 950 lakhs are annually produced in handloom sector. 20 depots and 5 show room are maintained by Handloom Weavers Corporative society. Keltron is a public undertaking industrial unit with large number of workers.
Techno park, perhaps ,the largest technology park in India is situated at kazhakuttam in Thiruvananthapuram District. It promotes electronic and information technology in the state. It consists of major companies like Infosys TCS ,Tata Elxsi, Allians Cornhill,RMT Plc, Mc Kinsey, Ernst and Young, along with some other companies from Europe and America. The campus of Tecnopark covers up an area of 184 .2 acres and the park has a built up space of 1.5 million square feet. There are around 61 companies, which give jobs to more than 5500 it professionals, including five CMM Level 5, CMM Level 3 and ISO9001 certified companies .More companies from different part of the world are coming forward to set up new IT companies, while some others are fed up and going out side.
